Thushs Movie World - Movies For Us All!

Why do we watch Movies?

August 20th 2006 13:16
I guess most of us would say that movies are an excellent source of entertainment and relaxation. Especially as there are different types of movies such as: comedy, drama, romance, thriller, action, children, and science fiction. So there is a movie category to cater to the type of person we are or the mood we are in when we chose to watch the movie.

But why else do we watch movies?

I guess one reason is because, especially women, identify themselves with characters in the movies. At times we like to look like them. Also, we cope with certain difficult times in our lives by identifying with characters in movies. So it is a kind of therapy in a sense!

Children of course enjoy watching movies as they like to grow up to be like the heroes in the movies and also like all the action (boys) and the dress up stuff (girls). Is this good or bad? Well I think too much of anything is not good…

Lastly, why do men watch movies? I think with them too, in addition to a source of entertainment, it is also a form of relaxation. They can sit at a movie, even if it has already started - and be glued to it, without batting an eyelid! I think action and sport movies definitely catch their interest a lot more than the others.

As long as we don’t get addicted to watching movies, I think it is definitely an excellent form of relaxation and entertainment for us al

why do you say women identify with movie characters? You could argue men are more likely to identify... look at Top Gun, Fight Club - guys fantasize about being larger than life heroes!

I watch movies for the same reason I read books, listen to music or visit art galleries.

Its a window into the soul of the human experience. Suspending disbelief, a good film will transport you to another world or into the darket reaches of the psyche.

Taking this viewer to places where dreams come true and seeing the world through other peoples eyes.

Blurring the line between reality and fiction to create stories that hopefully inspire thought and elicit very real emotions.

Half the time I watch movies as a form of escapism -- I want a break from my brain. The other half is to have an unusual experience or to learn something new.

Cibbuano,
You are quite right. Men identify themselves with movie characters too I guess.

John Doe,
What you say is so true. Movies definitely are a sense of 'escape' from reality.

I've loved movies since the get go ...
Star Wars changed my life aged 9.
I started going to film festivals at 15.
I was reviewing film festival films at 25.
I'm a passionate lover of horror movies and sf and I love the grind of exploitation.
I am most moved (after a good script and good direction) by the performances. I don't have to identify necessarily with the characters, but I need to believe they are doing what they are doing. And for the most part I need some kind of empathy, so I guess that is identifying, to a degree.
I know a lot of women who really dig action and horror movies.
And I know a few men who'd prefer to cry and find solace in some on-screen characters dysfunctional lovelife ... so go figure.

Bryn,
Yes I guess from all the feedback I have received, men and women both watch movies for similar as well as different reasons...thanks for making me figure things out!!!! Appreciate it!

I have many reasons for choosing the films I see. I usually choose the more unusual ones at The Dendy or Palace, films that make me think and I can hop into another world that I normally wouldn't have access to. If I'm still thinking of a film a few days later, I know that I have seen something good, something that has worked in making me think and is still with me....

I don't think I ever really aspire to be the female person in the film, but I admit when I've had a stressful week, I do enjoy some crappy, simplistic films. It's my form of escapism which I think we all need at times....
